The relationship between mandibular chin angle and condyle fracture in patients with symphysis-parasymphysis fractures referred to Tabriz Imam Reza Hospital in 2022-2023
Abstract
Introduction: Fractures of the symphysis and parasymphysis are significantly associated with condylar fractures. Anatomical features of the mandible, such as the position and prominence of the chin and the anterior height of the mandible, affect condylar fractures caused by fractures in other areas of the mandible.
Purpose: Determining the relationship between mandibular chin angle and condyle fracture in patients with symphysis-parasymphysis fractures referred to Tabriz Imam Reza Hospital.
Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional study, CT scans of patients with symphysis-parasymphysis fractures, which were stored in PACS system, were examined. The study samples were divided in to two groups with condylar fracture and without condylar fracture. Mandibular chin angle was measured in CT scan scout view using Image-j tool. The results were analyzed using SPSS version 24 software.
Results: This study was conducted on 142 patients with symphysis-parasymphysis fracture (71 cases with condyle fracture and 71 cases without condyle fracture). The incidence of condyle fracture in patients with parasymphysis fracture and symphysis fracture was 52.25% and 41.94%, respectively, which was not statistically significant between anterior fracture type and condyle fracture (p-value=0.31). The incidence of condyle fracture in men with parasymphyseal fracture is 2.43 times that of women, which was statistically significant (p-value=0.032). The mean ± standard deviation of Chin angle in patients with condyle fracture and without condyle fracture was equal to 129.07 ± 8.68 and 127.03 ± 8.11, respectively, and this difference was not statistically significant (p-value=0.151).
Conclusions: Considering the higher incidence of condyle fracture following parasymphysis fracture in men than women, the gender of patients should be taken into consideration in the evaluation of condyle fractures. Also, despite not being significant, the higher incidence of condyle fracture in patients with an increased chin angle and in parasymphysis patient Compared to the symphysis shows the importance of the chin angle and the type of anterior fracture in the clinical evaluation of condyle fractures.
