Considering that most of the patients who undergo cataract surgery are elderly and complete fasting, especially avoiding liquids, is exhausting for them or they need liquids to take their routine medications, so the purpose of this study is to investigate the possibility of nausea. And vomiting after cataract surgery in patients with complete fasting or fasting with clear liquids up to 2 hours before the operation so that the conditions can be facilitated and more favorable for the patients. Methods: This study, which is a randomized, double-blind clinical trial study with a prospective approach, was conducted with the participation of 100 patients who were candidates for cataract surgery. The patients were randomly divided into one of 2 groups of 50 people using a random block: one group of patients who came with complete fasting (eight hours) and the other group of patients who were allowed to consume liquids only 2 hours before the operation. they had. Local anesthesia was not used during surgery. The duration of surgery was approximately the same (ie, range of 35–40 minutes). After surgery, patients were transferred to the recovery room, where the incidence of PONV and the frequency of those requiring treatment for PONV were assessed and recorded by nurses blinded to the patient group. Results: The mean ± standard deviation of the severity of nausea and vomiting in the recovery unit was 6.01±1.14 in the intervention group and 8.88±1.14 in the control group (P=0.069)); 9 patients in the intervention group and 10 patients in the control group had severe nausea and vomiting in the recovery unit and needed metoclopramide (P=0.225).en_US
