Comparison of the effect of phenobarbital, topiramate and levotiracetam in the treatment of neonatal seizures

Abstract

Seizures are changes in the electrical activity of the brain. These changes can cause noticeable, noticeable, or in other cases asymptomatic symptoms. Seizures are one of the most common childhood disorders. The aim of this study was to compare phenobarbital, topiramate and levothiracetam in the treatment of neonatal seizures. Materials and Methods: The method of this study was a double-blind clinical trial. The statistical population of this study was all infants who in the last 2 years due to seizures have been referred to Tabriz Children's Hospital from 2018 to 2021 and to control seizures have been treated with one of the drugs phenobarbital, topiramate or leviracetam and the effect of the drug in controlling seizures. Convulsions and any complications have been studied in newborns. For one group of intervention based on oral phenobarbital 10-40 mg / kg / state and 5 mg / kg / day dosing, for one group of intervention based on oral topiramate 3-8 mg / kg / day and for the third group the intervention based on oral lutiracetam 10-40 mg / kg / day Chi-square test was used to analyze the data. Results: The number of neonates in each group was 20 and the results of the present study showed that there was no significant difference between phenobarbital, topiramate and levothiracetam in controlling neonatal seizures and changes related to brain waves. There was no significant difference between taking phenobarbital and topiramate in terms of seizure control and brain waves. There was no significant difference between phenobarbital and levotiracetam in terms of seizure control and brain waves. Also, the difference between topiramate and levotiracetam in terms of seizure control and brain waves was not statistically significant.
