Aim: Actinomycetem comitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria play a primary role in periodontitis. On the other hand, considering the antibacterial effects of licorice plant, in the present study, we investigated the frequency of common bacteria causing chronic periodontitis by PCR method and the effect of Licorice extract on these bacteria. Material and Method: Bacterial pecimens was collected from 176 patients admitted to Tabriz Dental School. After transferring the specimens to the laboratory, the DNA of sample was extracted using a DNA extraction kit. Using specific primers and PCR technique, the presence of the studied bacteria was examined. The PCR reaction products was examined by agarose gel electrophoresis and DNA band staining using DNA Safe Stain in the presence of DNA ladder. The minimum inhibitory concentration of licorice extract against isolated bacteria was determined by the method MIC and then by mbc. The results were presented by SPSS 24 software and frequency and frequency percentage. Results: The prevalence of actinomycetem comitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria was confirmed in 48% of the samples. In 18% of patients, actinomycetem comitans bacteria and 26% Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria and in 4% both bacteria were confirmed. MIC and MBC concentration of licorice for actinomycetem comitans bacteria were 7.81 and 20.53 respectively and for Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria were 4.69 and 10.94. Conclusion The prevalence of actinomycetem comitans and Porphyromonas gingivalis bacteria in periodontitis patients was 48%.en_US
