It is widely accepted that gastric cancer is one of the most common cancers of the gastrointestinal tract and one of the leading causes of cancer death in the world. Identifying the factors of poor response to chemotherapy, especially genetic factors, can greatly contribute to the treatment of this cancer. This study aimed to determine the frequency of Epstein-Barr Virus (EBV) EBNA-1 and BARF-1 genes in gastric adenocarcinoma samples from the East Azarbaijan and Ardabil provinces of Iran. Materials and Methods: The study was performed on 200 patients (100 people with gastric cancer 100 healthy people as control). After recording demographic information, the frequency of EBV EBNA-1 and BARF-1 genes in the samples was measured and the results were compared using independent t-test and Chi-square test. Results: Neither EBNA nor BARF was detected in gastric cancer samples. However, a statistically significant difference was found between the gastric cancer group and the control (healthy) group in terms of the family history of gastric cancer (23% for gastric cancer patients vs. 8% for healthy patients). Thus, it appears that EBV has had no obvious impact on the incidence of gastric cancer in the patients and genetic factors have played a greater role in this regard.en_US
