| dc.description.abstract | Early Warning scores are commonly used by hospital care teams to assess patients and diagnose early signs of their deterioration and initiate further treatment. Due to the existing studies and the lack of sufficient evidence for burn patients, we decided to investigate the value of MEWS and initial NEWS in predicting mortality in burn patients.
materials and methods. After obtaining permission from the Ethics Committee of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, patients who were candidates for hospitalization in the burn and ICU wards of Sina Hospital from July 1998 to March 1998 were included in this study. All demographic information including age, sex, APACHE Type of discharge, comorbidities, percentage of initial burns, initial hospitalization in burn ward or ICU, type and time of initiation and duration of antibiotic treatment, amount and type of serum prescribed for all patients recorded and NEWS and MEWS scores for All patients were enrolled immediately after admission to the ward or ICU as well as before discharge from the ward or ICU. Data were analyzed after registration in SPSS software version 24. All statistical tests were performed at a significant level of 5%.
Results. In this study, 80 cases of burns were studied with a mean age of 37.94 ± 18.85 years and 62% of cases were male. The initial NEWS index has a good ability to diagnose burn patients (Area = 0.79, P-value <0.001) and according to Youden index, the best cut point for initial NEWS 4.50 was obtained. Also, initial MEWS index has a good ability to diagnose burn patients (Area = 0.78, P-value <0.001). According to Youden index, the best cut point for initial MEWS was 1.50. | en_US |
