Prostate cancer (PC) is the fifth leading cause of death and the second most common cancer in men around the world, and in Iran PC is one of the ten most common cancers. Little is known about the mechanisms that cause the disease. Human papillomavirus (HPV) infection leads to malignant and benign lesions in the male and female genital area. Information on the role of HPV in PC is conflicting. In the present study, our aim was to determine the frequency and prevalence of HPV in cancerous and non-cancerous prostate specimens in Tabriz. Materials and methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive study, 50 paraffin samples of PC and 50 paraffin samples of benign prostatic hyperplasia as a control group were collected from the pathology department of Sina Hospital in Tabriz in 2018. After preparing the sample, it was transferred to the Infectious and Tropical Diseases Research Center Sina Hospital and thin sections of tissue were made. The paraffin samples were removed using xylol and then extracted using a DNA extraction kit, Pak Gene Co., DNA of the samples and stored at -20 ° C in sterile microtubes. All samples were tested using primers designed on HPV16 and HPV18 using PCR technique. Finally, PCR products were examined by electrophoresis. On the other hand, HeLa cells were used for positive control of papilloma 16 DNA and Cascade for papilloma 18. Results: Using PCR, 3 samples (6%) of 50 PC samples had HPV18 DNA but no HPV16 DNA was detected in PC samples. The mean age of patients in the HPV 18 positive group was 61.33 years with a standard deviation of 11.50 years, which ranged from 50 to 73 years. No positive DNA for HPV16 or HPV18 was observed in benign prostatic hyperplasia.en_US
