Uterine leiomyoma is common in women of childbearing age. Due to oxytocin and calcium ions that cause uterine contractions, uterine perfusion decreases, which appears to reduce intraoperative bleeding and the need for transfusions. The aim of the this study was to determine the effect of oxytocin and calcium infusion on the rate of bleeding during abdominal myomectomy. Materials and Methods: This double blinded placebo-controlled clinical trial was performed on 60 patients older than 30 years with ASA class of I or II and candidate for abdominal myomectomy under general anesthesia. In patients with oxytocin + calcium group (20 cases), 30 units of oxytocin and 1g calcium chloride in 120 ml of normal saline serum at a rate of 1 ml/min, in patients with oxytocin group (20 cases) 30 units of oxytocin and in placebo group (20 cases) the same volume of normal salin solution infused during surgery. Changes in hemodynamic variables and complications during and after surgery were recorded. Results:Changes in hemodynamic variables during the study were significantly lower in patients of oxytocin + calcium group than others. Bleeding during surgery was significantly lower in patients with oxytocin + calcium group than in patients in the other two groups (p=0.008). Postoperative hematocrit decrease was significantly lower in combination group patients (p=0.005) and oxytocin group (p=0.028) than in placebo group. Significantly none of the patients groups showed any side effects from the study solutions.en_US
