Knowledge and Attitude of Emergency Ward Nurses in affiliated Hospitals of Tabriz University of Medical sciences about pain management

Abstract

The importance and prevalence of pain among the population and the important role of nurses in pain management, patient comfort and the lack of adequate studies in this field in Iran, led us to the present study to determine the knowledge and attitude of nurses of the emergency department of the hospitals affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences on patient pain management. Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional analytical study, study population is all nurses working in hospitals affiliated to Tabriz University of Medical Sciences. After receiving permission from the ethics committee, the researcher went to the hospital, after explaining the objectives of the research and the voluntary nature of the research, provided the relevant questionnaire to all nurses working in the morning, evening and night shifts and collected after completion. The research instrument consisted of three parts: demographic information, nurses 'attitude assessment questionnaire (NAS) and nurses' knowledge assessment questionnaire in the field of pain (PMPAT). After collection the data were analyzed in SPSS23 software and a significance level of 0.05 was considered in all statistical tests. Results: 400 nurses from the emergency departments of East Azerbaijan province participated in this study and the findings of the study showed: 84.8% of the participants are low in terms of pain management knowledge and the average knowledge score is 40.34 ± 8.92 and attitude score was 60.87 ± 10.26. we did not detect a statistically significant correlation between attitude and knowledge of pain management (P = 0.432, r = -0.039).
