Valproic acid is a broad-spectrum antiepileptic drug used to treat both general and partial seizures. Indications for the use of valproic acid have also been extended to bipolar disorder and some neurological conditions including migraine and neuropathic pain. Therefore, the type of valproic acid formulation plays an important role in the onset of symptoms and severity of valproic acid poisoning, which has many therapeutic indications today. Aim:Relationship between the type of valproic acid formulation with the serum concentration of valproic acid and the severity of symptoms of poisoning in patients poisoned with valproic acid. Methods:All patients who have been admitted to Sina Hospital within 1 year of intoxication with Valproic Acid will be included and the demographic and clinical information of these patients will be recorded. The severity of patients' poisoning will be recorded in pre-designed checklists through the evaluation of clinical and laboratory symptoms. The relationship between the type of valproic acid formulation of the poisoning agent with the severity of the symptoms of poisoning and the serum concentration of valproate and laboratory findings in all patients will be investigated. Results: Based on the findings of this study and their statistical analysis, serum concentrations of valproic acid in poisoning patients did not show a significant relationship with gender and type of formulation and the use of concomitant drugs and drug interactions in poisoning patients. Conclusion:Despite the small number of samples in the study, only 2 formulations of Depakine 500 and Rahakin 200 were the cause of poisoning in the studied patients and no significant difference was observed between the concentration of valproic acid in terms of the studied parameters between these two formulations.en_US
