Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is an important cause of death and long-term disability, especially in young adults. Following brain damage, different hormonal responses may appear. These changes can also be seen during recovery and rehabilitation periods influencing the outcome. The aim of this study is evaluation of thyroid function tests and effect of levothyroxin in prognosis of traumatic brain injury. Methods: We devided our patients in two groups. First group received 50 mcg levothyroxin twice a day and second group received placebo with similar conditions, 3 days after traumatic brain injury. serum levels of T3, T4, TSH were evaluated in 100 patients with TBI on day-1, day-7, and time of discharge During treatment, a questionnaire related to Disability were assessed with Disability Rating Scale (DRS) and Glasgow OutcomeScale (GOS) score. Data were analyzed by SPSS version 20. A P-Value of < 0.05 was considered as statistically significant. Results: Patients did not differ significantly in terms of demographic characteristics. The mean levels of T3 and TSH in both groups were not significantly different. T4 levels of patients receiving levothyroxine were significantly higher than the placebo group. The mean DRS scores at discharge were lower in the levothyroxine group than in the placebo group.en_US
