Background: Despite significant advances in finding risk factors, hypertension remains an important public health issue. Therefore, the aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of dystemperament in people with hypertension. The aim of this study was to investigate the prevalence of general dystemperament in people with hypertention, to take steps towards better treatment of these patients. Due to the lack of a standard questionnaire, in the present study, a general dystemperament questionnaire was designed and its validity and reliability were evaluated. Materials and Methods: To design the questionnaire, the questions of general dystemperament were extracted from the texts of Persian medicine. A preliminary questionnaire was designed and the validity and reliability were assessed and cut off points were determined. 210 patients with hypertension were evaluated with this standard questionnaire of general dystemperament. Results: Content validity ratio, content validity index and also Intraclass Correlation Coefficient of the whole questionnaire are 0.88, 0.89 and 0.86, respectively. The cut-off point of this questionnaire was 63%. The highest frequency (28/1%) was related to general simple warm dystemperament and then simple dry dystemperament (18/1%). The mean systolic and diastolic blood pressures in warm dystemperament were 142/32 and 88/97. Conclusion: The questionnaire of general dystemperament is of good validity and reliability. In the study of the prevalence of general dystemperament in patients with hypertension, the general simple warm dystemperament was the most common. The frequency of warm dystemperament in people with high blood pressure was higher than cold dystemperament. Also, the mean blood pressure in warm dystemperament was higher than that in people with cold dystemperament and in all patiants who did not have warm dystemperament. Both warm dystemperament and dry dystemperament affect the prevalence of hypertension and also the mean systolic and diastolic hypertension.en_US
