The effects of inulin supplementation with weight loss diet on the serum level of tryptophan and kynorenin in obese women suffering from mild major depression disorder

all these parameters were non-significant post-intervention(P>0.05). Patients were stratified by the median weight loss of the whole study sample. When the data of our study were analyzed stratified by a minimum weight loss of 2.6 kg, no significant difference was observed for Tryptophan and Kynurenine levels, Tryptophan/Kynurenine ratio and HDRS scores post-intervention(P>0.05). Conclusion: Overall, Prebiotic supplementation (10 g/day) for eight weeks had significant beneficial effects compared to placebo on energy intake and protein on obese woman with mild MDD, while changes in Depression status, serum Tryptophan and Kynurenine levels and Tryptophan / Kynurenine ratio were not statistically significant. Further investigations with longer durations, other types or higher dosages of prebiotics or prebiotic supplementation (but not a calorie-restricted diet), are warranted to more vividly elucidate net effect of prebiotics on depressive symptoms.
