Expression of Nestin and SOX2 in dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in comparison to dermatofibroma

Abstract

Dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans is an important uncommon malignancy of soft tissue and differential diagnosis from common lesion of dermatofibroma is important and affects the prognosis. Use of IHC markers such as SOX2 and nestin is important in this era. Objective: Accordingly in this study, the expression of Nestin and SOX2 IHC markers in diagnosis of dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans in comparison to dermatofibroma was assessed. Material and Methods: In this observational study that was done as case-control assay, 9 consecutive patients with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and 50 cases with dermatofibroma admitted in Sina Hospital in Tabriz since 2011 to 2016 were evaluated and the expression of Nestin and SOX2 IHC markers in two diagnoses were assessed and compared. Results: The nestin was positive in all cases with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and it was negative in all dermatofibroma cases. Also SOX2 was negative in all cases with dermatofibrosarcoma protuberans and dermatofibroma patients. The sensitivity and specificity for nestin are 100% and these are 0% and 100% for SOX2.
