Silibinin is a flavonolignan compound found in the seeds and fruits of the milk thistle. It has long been used in the treatment of liver diseases such as liver cirrhosis and hepatitis. The US Food and Drug Administration has approved the use of capsules and tablets for the treatment of liver disease. Research shows that silibinin is used as an effective compound in the treatment of cancer by inhibiting the factors affecting the mechanisms of lung, skin, liver and intestinal cancers. Goal: In this research work, an electrochemical sensor was designed using a layer of Ag nanoparticles and polymer of β-cyclo dextrin to amplify the electrochemical signal to detect silibinin. Methods and materials: A layer of Ag nanoparticles was deposited on the electrode surface using electrochemical methods and a solution of AgNO3. Then a polymer of β-cyclo dextrin was coated on the modified surfaceThe designed sensor was applied to detect and determine the amount of silibinin in standard samples as well as human plasma. Result: Under optimal conditions, the designed electrochemical sensor is able to determine the amount of silibinin in the linear range of 0.0103 to 10.3 μM. Discussion: An electrochemical sensor was designed and fabricated to determine the amount of silibinin in standard samples as well as human plasma. Due to the unique features of this sensor such as stabilization of compatible and stable substrates of Ag nanoparticles and β-cyclo dextrin and the ability to detect very small amounts of the analyte in the micromolar range, the prepared sensor can be used in clinical models.en_US
