Abstract Introduction and Purpose: In a healthy organization, the physical and mental health of employees is as important and significant to the management of the organization as production and productivity. The quality of service to patients is directly affected by the workload of nurses. In nursing profession, cognitive failures include mistakes or errors that the nurse makes in performing tasks that she naturally is able to perform. When a person's abilities are not sufficient for the demands of the workplace, burnout syndrome appears. Considering the importance and effect of the mentioned cases on how nurses provide services, this study was conducted to investigate the relationship between perceived mental workload with cognitive failure and burnout among emergency department nurses in Urmia hospitals. .Materials and Methods: In this cross-sectional descriptive-analytical study, 303 nurses working in the emergency department of public and private hospitals in Urmia were selected and studied. Data was collected by Demographic, NASA-TLX, CFQ and Maslach questionnaire. Data were analyzed using Pearson correlation test and T-test using SPSS software (version 25) at the significance level of 0.05. Results: The results showed that there was a significant relationship between mental workload and cognitive failure in nurses (P_value ≤0.05). The relationship between mental workload and burnout was also significant (P_value ≤0.05). There was also a significant relationship between cognitive failure and burnout (P_value ≤0.05). The results of t-test showed that the mean of mental workload in private hospitals (44.65 ± 1.18) was lower than public hospitals (51.1 ± 1.52). The difference between the mean of the cognitive failure and its sub-components was not significant in private and public hospitals ((P_value > 0.05). Also, the mean of burnout in private hospitals (77.34 ± 0.98) was lower than public hospitals (83.53 ± 1.14). Conclusion: The findings of this study showed that cognitive failure can be considered as a mediating variable in the relationship between workload and burnout. It is also possible to differentiate between private and public hospitals in terms of workload, burnout and cognitive failure. According to this study, the level of cognitive failure in nurses of emergency department in Urmia was high. Perceived mental workload and burnout were reported at moderate levels.
