Abstract Aims: The objective of this study was to investigate the potential of enterococcus faecium Conditioned media (CM), isolated from a healthy female vagina, in inhibiting growth and inducing apoptosis of ovarian cancer cells (Caov-4 cells). Materials and Methods: Caov-4 cells were treated with enterococcus faecium CM at different concentrations (0.2, 0.5, 1, 1.5 and 2 OD of co-cultured bacteria) and incubation times (12, 24, 48 h). The apoptotic effect of enterococcus faecium CM on Caov-4 cells was investigated by DAPI staining and evaluating expression of BAX and PTEN gene. Results: enterococcus faecium CM was able to inhibit the proliferation of Caov-4 cells. This bacterium also induced apoptosis in Caov-4 cells and increased expression of apoptotic genes. Conclusions: Our results suggest that enterococcus faecium CM has potential to provide protection against ovarian cancer cells by inducing apoptosis. So, it can be considered as probiotic for cancer prevention.en_US
