Abstract: Introduction: Preeclampsia, multi system and multi factorial disease, is a major cause of maternal and prenatal mortality, and death in worldwide. It complicates 2-8% pregnancies. Oxidative stress and nutrition have been proposed as a key factor involved in the development of preeclampsia. So, the present study was designed to determine relationship of selenium plasma level with preeclampsia, as an antioxidant, against reduction damage of tree radicals. Materials and Method: Case control study consisting 40 preeclamptic, 40 healthy pregnant women, in 34-39th weeks gestation were matched considering the age of pregnancy and mineral supplements intake. Plasma level of selenium measured by atomic absorption. Data have been analyzed by using of statistical tests (t test, chi –square, regression), SPSS v 13.0 and α=0.05. Results: no significant differences were observed in maternal age, gravidity, abortion, and supplement intake between two groups. (p>0.50). Mean plasma level of selenium significantly decreased in preeclamptic women compared with healthy group. (p=0.001). Being in the bottom tertile of plasma level of selenium was relationship with a 4.96- fold (OR=4.96, CI 95%; 15.6 =1.56, P=0.006) greater incidence of the condition. Conclusion: The result of this study shows that low selenium plasma related to risk of preeclampsia. It seems that diet contain of selenium during pregnancy might help prevent preeclampsia.en_US
