Abstract: Introduction: Labor pain is one of the most sever pains which one can experience. Intense pain leads to stress and has unfavorable effects on the mother and fetus. This research was proposed to determine the effect of using Entonox (N2O) self -administration on reducing labor pain in the active phase of labor and delivery, mode of delivery, and newborn's Apgar score and his arterial Oxygen saturation. Material & Methods: One hundred and twenty primiparous women in 29 Bahman hospital has participated in a Quasi –experimental research. They signed the written contest which had detail information about indication, contraindication and possible side effect of Entonox. They asked to participate according their will assured that all information would keep confidential. This research was approved by the committee of Ethical issues in Tabriz Medical University. A questionnaire including: Demographic data, Visual analogue pain scale, Partograph, and delivery summery were used. At the active phase of labor, they randomly divided into 2 groups: Entonox user or oxygen user. Intensity of mother's pain, progress of labor –delivery in mother and the Newborn condition was asked/ observed. Results: There was a significant difference in Frequency of pain intensity in two groups. The mean score of pain intensity in Entonox user, in the first & second stage of labor was 5.93 and 5.82 respectively, while for the oxygen it was 6.99 and 6.74. It was a meaningful statistical difference between mean of pain intensity in two groups (p<…..). But, we found no significant difference between modes of delivery; progress of labor and newborns Apgar score and oxygen arterial saturation in two groups. Conclusion: According to research results, Entonox reduces the intensity of pain in labor –delivery more than oxygen (placebo) and is effective and safe for use in the active phase of labor and delivery. Also we found no unfavorable effect on Apgar score and oxygen saturation in newborns. But it does not help reducing Cesarean section rate. Midwifes may administrate this method in managing of pain relief successfully.en_US
