The aim of this study was to determine the relationship between serum levels of 25(OH)D and echocardiographic findings in patients with severe mitral stenosis.. Method and materials: In this cross-sectional study conducted in Tabriz Shahid Madani Educational Center, 104 patients with severe mitral stenosis in the field of RHD and in the absence of other susceptible underlying diseases, whether pending for PTMC or under PTMC, reviewed. Trans esophageal Echocardiography was performed for all patients and mitral valve Wilkins score, left ventricular volume, mitral valve area, pulmonary artery systolic pressure, left ventricular ejection fraction and clot were recorded in the left atrium. Blood samples were taken from patients and levels of 25(OH)D, total calcium, phosphorus and i-PTH were measured.. Results: 88 cases were female and 16 were male. 54 were vitamin D deficient, 35 had inadequate and only 15 had normal blood levels of vitamin D. The findings suggest that in patients with severe mitral valve stenosis, vitamin D deficiency is common and more frequent than general population. However, this frequency was not significantly different between men and women (p <0.05). The quantitative level of 25(OH)D, calcium, phosphorous and iPTH with total Wilkins score and none of its sub units were not significantly correlated. Also, their level was not related to left ventricular volume, mitral valve area, pulmonary artery systolic pressure, left ventricular drainage fraction, and clot in the left atrium (p <0.05 for all of the above). In addition, levels of 25(OH)D were qualitatively categorized as deficient, inadequate, and normal, which was not related to the Wilkins score and not to the echocardiographic criteria (p <0.05 for all of the above).en_US
