Abstract

Introduction Canal preparation may potentially influence the fracture strength of the teeth by producing dentinal defects. The aim of this study was to compare the fracture strength of teeth prepared with Protaper universal (PTU), Protaper Next(PTN) or Protaper Gold(PTG) systems.

Materials & Methods Fifty six mandibular premolars with single canals were used. After PDL simulation, the samples were randomly divided into following 4 groups (n=14): In control groups, the canals were not prepared. In the remaining 3 experimental groups, the canals were prepared using PTU, PTN or PTG rotary systems. Then, the fracture strength of teeth was recorded using universal testing machine. One way ANOVA test was used to statistically analyze the data.

Results There was no statistically significant difference between groups (P=0.115).

Conclusion Canal preparation using Protaper rotary systems made of conventional NiTi (PTU), M-wire (PTN), or Gold wire (PTG) has no significant effect on fracture strength of mandibular premolars.
