Comparison of the effects of 5% hydroquinone with Non-ablative fractional laser 1540 erbium YAG and 5% hydroquinone alone in the treatment of refractory melasma

In this study, we consider laser & hydroquinone combination effect on resistant lesions of melasma.
Methods and Material:
This clinical trial study to evalute patients for 5 months that refer to Sina Hospital of Tabriz for treatment of melasma. Patinets (data form complated by the investigator) were divided into two groups. A group were treated with a solution of 5% hydroquinone and a group treated with a solution of hydroquinone and laser (non ablative). The pigment change in terms of recovery time, the color, the size of the pigment and the resulting effects over a period of study was filled in data form (with assistant of clinical evaluation). Melasma area severity index the resulting data is calculated to evalute clinical improvement. Collected Data’s were entered to SPSS 20 software and analyzed.
Results:
In group hydroquinone, mean age 29.72±3.36 years and hydroquinone+ laser in the 31.36± 3.62 years, respectively. 56% of first group and the 40% of secound group had a history of hormone therapy. In both groups, 96% had a history of pregnancy. In terms of employment, in the group of hydroquinone, 56% of employees in the group hydroquinone+ laser 52% were employees. Common side effects in both groups were erythema and scaling. The extent and severity of melasma (MASI) at different times was significantly lower in the hydroquinone+ laser group. The mean score of melasma in various stages of treatment in the hydroquinone group had a significant differnce. So the on the first day and fifth month was not significantly different. But between the months of the secound, third and fourth were lower. The clinical condition in hydroquinone+ laser the group per month compared to the previous month decreased significantly.
