Echium amoenum is one of the most important herbal remedies in Iranian traditional medicine that various studies have shown its pain control properties. The aim of this study was to evaluate the efficacy of this herb in controlling pain after periodontal surgery. Materials and Methods: Fifty patients who referred to Tabriz Dental School for Crown Lengthening surgery were divided into two equal groups then Crown Lengthening Surgery was performed by the planter. In the first group (Echium amoenum) 24 h before surgery, a dose of Echium amoenum herbal tea was administered every 12 hours by the patient at home, and a dose was administered to patients of first group one hour before surgery. After surgery, the painkiller was prescribed (novafen) as prescribed by the surgeon. The first dose of the drug was administered immediately after surgery and subsequent doses 6 hours apart from the first dose. The drug was given to the patients for 3 days. Postoperative pain was assessed by VAS at 30 minutes, 1 hour and 3 hours after surgery and 24, 48 and 72 hours after surgery using VRS. The data were analyzed by SPSS software. Results: VAS index at 30 minutes, 1 and 3 hours after surgery in group that used Echium amoenum herbal tea was significantly lower than the control group(P<0.05). Also In both groups, pain intensity was significantly increased up to 3 hours after surgery (P <0.05). In the first 24 hours, the VRS index of Echium amoenum herbal tea group was significantly lower than the control group (P <0.05) and there was no significant difference between the two groups at 48 and 72 hours (P> 0.05). Conclusion: According to the result of this study and other studies, it can be concluded that Echium amoenum reduces pain severity after Crown Lengthening surgery.
