Cholecystectomy is the surgery for removing the patient's gallbladder and is a common procedure in the world. Gallstones are the most common cause of cholecystitis and cholecystectomy. The choices for performing this procedure are either open surgery or laparotomy or can be laparoscopic. Dilated CBD is one of the common complications of this procedure and is used to treat ERCP. There is currently no study on the prevalence of dilated CBD and its causes after cholecystectomy and its relation with two types of cholecystectomy in Iran. The statistical results obtained from ERCP indicate that a few percent of dilated CBDs are due to cholecystectomy, and also indicate the relationship between this complication and the type of cholecystectomy procedure which will help specialists to choose better procedure for surgery. Methods and material: This study is a cross-sectional study that investigates the etiology of dilated CBD in patients undergoing cholecystectomy in open and laparoscopic methods. The statistical population of this study included all patients referred to the emergency department of Imam Reza Hospital who had undergone cholecystectomy. Sampling was done in a quantitative manner and data were analyzed using Spss-22 software. Findings: In this study, 66 patients over 5 years of age who were referred to the Emergency Department of Imam Reza Hospital with dilated CBD symptoms were studied. 27 patients (40.9%) underwent laparotomy (group 1) and 39 patients (59.1%) underwent laparoscopy (group 2). The mean size of CBD in patients undergoing laparotomy was 12.63 /1±1.82 mm with a median of 13 mm and in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery was 12.20 ± 2.04 mm with a median of 12 mm.en_US
