Abstract
Title: Analysis of Pain management training in nursing student’s educational curriculum of Tabriz University of medical sciences.
Introduction: proper pain management increases the patient’s confidence in the ability of the medical staff, reducing patient and community costs, and improving the quality of client life. Pain management is preferred to pain relief, and proper pain management is one of the most important educational areas for nursing students as members of the health team. Accordingly, pain management training and the adequacy of the courses provided in this regard should be reviewed and the shortcomings and deficiencies of pain management training should be clarified in order to provide these students with comprehensive and complete training.
Methodology: this cross-sectional study was performed on 73 nursing students of 7th and 8th semester of Tabriz University of medical sciences and nursing instructors and underquote nursing curriculum in 1397. Students were selected using census method and completed the pain management knowledge and attitude questionnaire. The undergraduate nursing curriculum was then evaluated for pain management training. Finally, nursing instructors were asked to describe the method teaching pain management to students using a researcher-made questionnaire.
Results: a review of the educational curriculum showed that the mention was made of pain management and in none of the courses offered in the undergraduate nursing, the nursing process related to pain management was not fully stated. Also, the overall score of nursing student’s knowledge about pain management was 9.24±2.23, indicating low knowledge and their attitude score was 70.56±5.90, which indicates a relatively good attitude toward student’s pain management. The finding showed that %85 of educators did not pass the pain management course and only the internal medicine, surgical and pediatric groups taught the pain management and all teachers were teaching according to the curriculum.
