The study aim is to evaluate the effect of fasting duration on blood glucose level before and after induction for diabetic type 2 patients. Methods This study was descriptive-analytical. During 6 months, data of 61 patients were collected by questioning and patient’s recordings. Collected data included age, sex, weight, height, fasting time for solids and liquids, last anti-diabetic drug and duration of usage, duration of diabetes, anti diabetic drugs and their dosages, fasting blood glucose level in the day of operation, blood glucose immediately before induction of anesthesia, blood glucose level 1 hour after induction, intravenous fluid intake before surgery, type of operation. Results Results showed that the mean fasting time is 16.2 ± 3.0 hours, the minimum fasting time is 7 hours and the maximum fasting time is 23 hours. Also, regarding that the standard fasting time is below the 12 hours, only 5 patients observed it, while 34.4% of patients had a fasting time of more than 18 hours. A gender-based fasting time study showed that the fasting time of men and women was 15.8, 16.4 hours on average, respectively. The results also showed that the fasting blood sugar in the day of operation, blood glucose immediately before induction of anesthesia, blood glucose level 1 hour after induction, were 194.15, 158.52 and 151.74 mg/dl for men and 175.1, 147.28, 143.83 for women, respectively. This issue indicated a declining sequence in blood sugar levels over these three time periods.en_US
