The effect of probiotic yogurt and conventional yoghurt in women with gestational diabetes who were referred to Alzahra and Taleghani hospitals in Tabriz
Abstract
The aim of current study is to evaluate the effects of probiotic and conventional yogurt in women with GDM.
Methods: In this randomized clinical trial, 84 pregnant women with GDM were randomly assigned to receive 300 grams probiotic or conventional yogurt for 8 weeks. Fasting blood sugar (FBS) and HbA1c after intervention and pregnancy outcome were compared between two groups.
Results: Two groups were comparable regarding baseline findings. There was no significant difference between patients receiving probiotic yogurt with conventional yogurt in cesarean section rate (64.3% vs. 45.2%, p=0.12) and admission to NICU (4.8% vs. 7.1%, p=0.64). Patients receiving probiotic yogurt had significantly lower newborn weight (3105.71±533.81 vs. 3435.00±473.50, p=0.004) and lower macrosomia (4.8% vs. 19%, p=0.04). Probiotic yogurt compared to conventional yogurt had significantly higher percent of decrease in FBS (-2.70±9.30 vs. 1.51±11.60, p=0.03), BS postprandial (-12.04±15.37 vs. 1.61±14.42, p<0.001) and HbA1c (-2.90±2.00 vs. -1.20±6.84, p=0.03).
