| dc.description.abstract | Background and objective: The term “Shift worker” is generally used
for people who are working at any schedule other than the standard
daylight hours (7 am-6 pm). In addition to the many diseases are
associated with shift working, it is one of the most common causes of
burnout and fatigue caused by work, So, the aim of this study was to
evaluate fatigue and burnout among 8 and 12-hour shift workers in
petrochemical industries.
Methods: Data were collected using a general questionnaire for the
demographic characteristic as well as Maslach burnout inventory (MBI-
22) and multidimensional fatigue inventory (MFI-20).
Result: Result of the study showed a weak relationship between the
individual and occupational demographic characteristics on fatigue and
burnout dimensions. 12-hours shift workers suffer more significantly
than 8-hours from higher general fatigue, physical, mental, emotional,
depersonalization and lower personal accomplishment (p<0.05). No
significant difference was found between reduced activity and
motivation in 8 and 12 hours shifts comparison (p>0.05). Only about
15% of 12-hours shift workers possess high personal accomplishment
whereas 85% of 8-hour shift workers had a high level of self
accomplishment in both shifts mental fatigue had the most correlation
with depersonalization.
Conclusion: 12 hour shift workers were most prone to job induced
fatigue and burnout among the others and were suffering from
personality difficulties. Job burnout is more related to mental linkedfatigue aspects and to reduce these factors, company management has to
pay attention to employee’s hygiene levels, health and welfare. | en_US |
