Investigation of the advantages and disadvantages of E-prescribtions on prescribing and dispensing of prescriptions from physicians and pharmasists view

Abstract

Introduction: Using prescription drugs to treat diseases is one of the most powerful tools for treating illnesses, and on the other hand, one of the most common medical errors in the health field is prescribing and sometimes it can have serious effects and endanger the health of the patient. The electronic prescription system improves numerous paper prescription problems and saves and reduces care costs, reduces prescription errors, medication errors, adverse drug side effects, and improves drug therapy and patient health. Objective: The present study goal was the advantages and disadvantages of electronic prescriptions in the writing and dispensing of medical prescriptions from the perspective of physicians and pharmacists who use electronic prescription. Method: This is a cross-sectional descriptive study and the statistical population was as available sample from all physicians and pharmacists which are in Tabriz's 29 Bahman and Alinasab hospitals. Questionnaires completed by physicians and pharmacists of these two hospitals using electronic prescriptions with the total of 30 persons. Results: The results showed that users of the electronic prescription system considered the system as effective in reducing error in drug interactions (96.7%) and in reducing error in prescribing (100%) and 96% described electronic prescriptions software as user-friendly. 46.3% of participants consider inadequate facilities, In addition, more than 90 percent stated that using electronic prescription software requires training courses. Conclusion: The use of electronic prescribing system reduces error in drug interactions and prescription writing. On the other hand, with reduced costs, user-friendliness and ease of use of electronic scripting software is possible. To get the most out of this system we need more training.
