Nephrolithiasis is one of the prevalent reasons for attending to a physician among all societies and its recurrence is also seen in the majority of patients. Variety of procedures have been suggested for the treatment of nephrolithiasis that open surgery and percutaneous nephrolithotomy are of most common ones. However, the recurrence of nephrolithiasis between these procedures has not been compared. Therefore, in this study, we aim to compare these two prevalent procedures regarding long-term recurrence of nephrolithiasis. Methods & Materials: Through a retrospective study, all patients with nephrolithiasis who were admitted in Emam Reza Hospital of Tabriz and received one of the two treatment including open surgery or PNL one year before the study were selected and were allocated into two matched groups and were invited to the hospital’s clinics and were studied using ultrasonography. Also, previous ultrasonographic findings of patients were evaluated and compared with the final ultrasonography findings. Then, analysis of the data was done by SPSS version 22. Results: An overall 50 cases were evaluated which 28 patients (56%) were male and 22 patients (44%) were female. Mean age was 48.6 +/- 9.69. 25 patients had received PNL (50%) and 25 patients (50%) had received open surgery. The two groups had no significant differences regarding age (p=0.179), sex (p=1.000) and type of stones (p=0.588). In the open surgery group, 10 patients (40%) and in the PNL group, 12 patients (48%) had a recurrence of nephrolithiasis (p=0.569). Also, the two study groups had no significant differences regarding hydronephrosis in ultrasonography (p=0.600), renal cortex echo changes (p=1.000), and mean renal stones’ size (p=0.691).en_US
