Correlation of axial inclination and irregularity of mandibular incisor with tongue volume in CBCT

Abstract

Introduction: Considering the importance of the effect of soft tissue development in oral and anterior teeth in orthodontic treatment; The aim of this study was to investigate correlation of axial inclination and irregularity of mandibular incisors with volume of tongue by CBCT radiographic images.

Methods: In this study, the CBCT archives of individuals referred to the Radiology Department of Tabriz Dental School (n = 70) were used. The study was a cross sectional-analytic study. Initial reconstruction of the data was done with the New Tome VGI software. The volume and angles of IMPA, FMIA Interinsisal, LAFH, and MPA were evaluated in CBCT samples by Romexis software and measured in three dimensions. The results of the study were analyzed by SPSS17 using descriptive and analytical statistics.

Results: The results of our study showed that There is a positive and direct correlation between the volume of tongue and irregularity in men (P = 0.017). Also, there was no significant correlation between volume of tongue and incisive slope (P = 0.18, r = -0.11). It also showed that there is a positive and direct correlation between volume of tongue and LAFH (P = 0.038, r = 0.21).

Conclusion: According to the results of our study, it is expected that with increased volume of tongue, the irregular intensity of the injectors will also increase. The correlation between the volume of the tongue and the ancizier slope was not significant, the correlation between the volume of the tongue and the LAFH is significant, there is a correlation between the volume of tongue and irregularity in men.
