Introduction: The potential role of oxidative stress in morphine dependency shows that antioxidant drugs which suppress oxidative stress may be useful in preventing morphine-induced dependency. Aim: The aim of this study was to evaluate the effects of sodium selenite and vitamin E on the prediction of morphine-induced dependency in mice. Method: Ten groups containing 9 male mice , weighing 20 to 30 g , were randomly selected and given the following doses for a six-day period. On the first two days , they were only receiving the medicine and on the following four days , morphine were added to the medicine as well. The treatment groups included: 1) Saline (10 ml/kg,i.p.) + Saline (10 ml/kg,i.p.) 2) Morphine(50 mg/kg,i.p.) + Saline (10 ml/kg,i.p.) 3) Morphine(50 mg/kg,i.p.)+ Sodium selenite ( 0.25,0.5,1 mg /kg,i.p.) 4) Morphine(50 mg/kg,i.p.)+ Vitamin E (20,40,60 IU/kg,i.p.) 5) ) Morphine(50 mg/kg,i.p.)+Almond oil (10mg/kg,i.p.) (as vitamine E carrier) 6) Morphine(50 mg/kg,i.p.)+ Sodium selenite ( 0.25 mg/kg,i.p. )+ Vitamin E (20 IU/kg,i.p.) On the 6th day of administrating doses of sodium selenite and vitamin E , 2 hours after the injection of the last morphine dose , naloxone ip (4 mg / kg) was injected in all groups and signs of discontinuation (jumping and standing On both feet) was evaluated Results: The results showed that co-administration of sodium selenite and vitamin E (at low doses) significantly reduced morphine dependence ( p < 0.05). Conclusion : The doses of vitamin E and sodium selenite which were used in this study did not affect the dependence, but their combined doses (at low doses) reduced morphine dependence and had synergistic effects.en_US
