dc.description.abstract | In current study, the efficacy of combined external beam radiotherapy with intraluminal brachytherapy is evaluated in the brachytherapy ward ofImam-reza hospital (Tabriz-Iran) and the results was compared with treatment results from other oncology centers.
Materials and Methods:This is a descriptive study, all patients with diagnosis of esophageal cancer which referred to brachytherapy ward during 2006 – 2016 were studied and necessary data were collected from patients records. Finally the one, three and five year survival rate (whichone could be possible) were recorded. All patients which their treatment was completed till end of 2016 , were included in this study.
According to the collected data, beside recording survival rate, the correlation between the prognostic factors and survival rate, were analyzed too.
Findings:Total number of 221 patients were studied .The mean survival rate of patients was 18.16-+1.43 month. The peak incidence of disease was between 71-75 years. Most of thelesions, were located at distal one third of esophagus. The most common histologic type, was SCC. In most casesthe length of the lesion was between 3-6 cm.
Conclusion: There is,no significant relationship between age, anatomic location of thelesion, histologic subtype, gender, patient residency area and the survival rate. However, there was a statistically significant and inverse, relationship between tumor length and survival. Due to fixed treatment protocol for all patients, there was no significant relation between, total dose of radiation (External and brachytherapy) and fractionation with the survival rate. | en_US |
