Comparison of Maternal Satisfaction between Delivery with Neuraxial Analgesia and Natural Vaginal Delivery

Abstract

The aim of present study was to compare of maternal satisfaction between delivery with neuraxial analgesia and natural vaginal delivery. Methods & Materials: In a cross-sectional study, 45 nulliparous women undergoing vaginal delivery without using analgesia and 45 nulliparous women undergoing vaginal delivery with neuraxial analgesia who referred to Taleghani Educational-Medical Hospital of Tabriz University of Medical Sciences, were included the study. Pain intensity based on VAS score and maternal satisfaction from delivery based on SWCH & BSS-R checklists were determined. Statistical analysis was performed using SPSS version 22 software and relationship between variables was assessed by Pearson coefficient. P-value<0.05 was considered statistically significant. Results: Mean VAS score in group without analgesia was 8.55±2.07 and in group with neuraxial analgesia was 6.24±2.02 (P=0.001). Based on SWCH and BBS-R checklists the mean of maternal satisfaction in the mothers group without analgesia were 35.37±10.85 in the range of 13 to 53 and 24.06±5.58 in the range of 15 to 37 respectively, and in the group of mothers with neuraxial analgesia were 42.00±6.13 in the range of 26 to 53 and 27.35±5.62 in the range of 12 to 37 respectively. There was an inverse association between severity of pain during labor and delivery satisfaction based on SWCH checklist (r= -0.293, P=0.005). Conclusion: Based on findings of present study, using neuraxial analgesia reduced the pain of natural childbirth and increases maternal delivery satisfaction significantly
