| dc.description.abstract | The association of -2548 G/A polymorphism with diabetes has been discussed in previous studies, but there is no study on nephropathic patients. To investigate the -2548G/Polymorphism as a possible risk factor for incidence of nephropathy in diabetic patients. Distributions of Leptin -2548G/A genotypes were evaluated in 100 diabetic nephropathy and 100 diabetic non-nephropathy Iranian Azeri Turkish patients, using polymerase chain reaction-restriction fragment length polymorphism technique. Also glucose, lipid profile, kidney parameters, insulin and leptin levels were evaluated. The results showed that the GA and AA genotypes could increase nephropathy risk about 2- and 3-fold, respectively (p= 0.034 and 0.009 respectively) but considering serum leptin levels as affecting factor eliminated such association. Serum levels of leptin were higher in AA carriers than patients with other genotypes (p<0.05). We found that levels of creatinine and insulin were positively correlated with leptin levels in diabetic non-nephropathy group. GFR levels were negatively correlated with leptin levels in all studied and diabetic non-nephropathy groups. Our findings showed that considering leptin levels as affecting variable, the LEP-2548G/A polymorphism is not associated with nephropathy complication in diabetic patients and the polymorphism may affect through increasing leptin levels. | |
