dc.description.abstractOdontogenic infections are one of common causes of dentists visit. There is also high rate of odontogenic infections in patients visiting tertiary hospitals. Odontogenic infections present with different space involvement. In this study, we aim to evaluate gender and space involvement in odontogenic infections. Methods: In this descriptive-cross sectional study, 83 patients with odontogenic infections visiting maxillofacial surgery ward, Imam Reza educational medical center in 2012 were evaluated. By reviewing patientsE medical records, demographic findings including age and gender and involved spaces were recorded. Results: Study population comprised of 46 male (55.42%) and 37 female (44.58%) with mean age 33.2816.41 years. Age range was 2-75 years. Frequency of odontogenic infections were respectively: Buccal space in 57.80%, submandibular space in 55.40%, ptrygomandibular space in 9.60%, submental space in 6%, canin in 4.80%, others in 3.6%, infraorbit and masseteric space each in 2.4% and sublingual space in 1.2%. There was multi-space involvement in some cases. Conclusion: Odontogenic infections occur in any age. Prevalence of infections in male patients is higher than females. Buccal and submandibular spaces were the most common spaces for odontogenic infections.
