Some materials such as chlorhexidine 0.2% or sodium fluoride 0.05% mouthwashes are spreadly used in orthodontic patients for plaque control . But they have some side effects. Metal nanoparticles have been recently used in dental material in reports but no studies have been conducted on determining antibacterial effect of Ag/ZnO nanoparticle (n.p) in mouthwashes. So we aimed to evaluate antibacterial effect of ZnO and Ag/ZnO nanoparticles against streptococcus mutans and compare them with chlorhexidine 0.2 % , sodium fluoride 0.05% and some of their compositions. ZnO and Ag/ZnO n.ps were synthesized by photo reduction method. Then sixteen groups of mouthwashes were prepared. We used Zone Of Inhibition (ZOI) test to evaluation of antibacterial effects of as-prepared mouthwashes, against S.mutans.The data was analyzed by Kolmogorov-Smirnovb , Kruskal-Wallis and MannEWhitney U test. P values were adjusted by Bonferroni Correction. P adjusted <0.05 was considered as significant. Our study showed that mouthwash containing Ag/ZnO 10% has the highest antibacterial properties against S.mutans amoung study groups, so it can be served as an alternative mouthwash in plaque control instead of chlorhexidine 0.2% after invivo studies.
