The use of Radiomorphometric indices on panoramic radiographs ,ie.Mandibular cortical Width (MCW),Panoramic Mandibular Index(PMI),Alveolar Crest Resorption(M/Mratio),Morphologic classification of the mandibular inferior cortex (MIC grade) and Number of lost teeth can be useful in the Evaluation of BMD in Postmenopausal Women. biochemical markers of bone turnover may be useful for prediction of osteoporosis in postmenopausal Women. The aim of this study was to determine the diagnostic value of dental panoramic radiographs and biochemical markers of bone turnover in relation to BMD at the spine and Hip bone in a group of postmenopausal women. Subjects and method: An assessment of MCW,PMI,M/Mratio. MIC grade and number of lost teeth was performed on panoramic radiographs in a group of 140 postmenopausal Women 44-82 years of age. BMD at the Lumbar spine and Hip bone was measured bo Dual Energy X-ray Absorptiometry (DEXA).BMD values were categorized as normal ( T-score E1) and as osteopenia ( T-score E1 to E2.5 ) or osteoporosis ( T-score less than E2.5) according to the WHO classification. Serum Alkalin phosphatase was measured by an Enzyme Immunoassay .25(OH)D3 was measured with Electrochemiluminescence. Results: In our study ,a decrease in MCW by 1 mm ,increases The likelihood of Osteopenia or osteoporosis to 40% having taken into consideration the effect of the Menopause Duration and a decrease in MCW by 1 mm increases the likelihood of moderately or severely eroded cortex to 28% having taken into consideration the effect of the age. M/M ratio and Number of lost teeth did not have relation to BMD.
