Bruxism is one of a number of parasomnias. Parasomnias common in children include: (1) muscle cramps ,(2) enuresis,(3) colic,(4) drooling,(5) sleeptalking, and(6) sleepwalking. Bruxism is potentially harmful to oral health through the destruction of oral tissues, restored teeth, and dental prostheses. The purpose of this study was to determine the prevalence of bruxism and related factors in people 6 up under 17 years old in Tabriz, iran, in 2009. Material and method: In this cross-sectional and descriptive study, 500 school students of Tabriz were selected and kept under study to analyse bruxism behavior of them during specific period of time. In order to analyse recorded data, schools were divided into 5 regions and then from each region a school for girls and a school for boys were selected randomly. Required data were gathered from questionnaires and examinations. Questionnaires were filled by parents and then by examination to check the answers. Results:The gathering data from 500 questionnaires demonstrates that 46% of students are in the ages between 6-12 years and 54% are in the ages between 12-16 years. This research also shows that only 37.2% of parents are university educated. This research shows that overall prevalence of bruxism in Tabriz for the people under age of 17 is 28%, there is no significant relation between demographic characteristics and prevalence of bruxism. For 53.5% of the children who they had bruxism at least one of parents had the same problem and just for 11.9% of the children without bruxism one of the parents had got bruxism. There is significant relation between oral habits and bruxism except history of utilizing pacifier (P=0.063). All parameters of health except C-section delivery have effect on bruxism (P=0.119) and stress, anxiety and parasomnias have significant effect on bruxism. Number of control times of parents during sleeping of children has effect to increase reporting of bruxism but proximity of parentsE and childrenEs bedroom (P=0.26) or situation of doors during the children sleeping time (e.g. opening or closing of doors) (P=0.23) have no effect on increasing of reporting of bruxism. Temporomandibular disorders have no effect on bruxism(P=0.68 ). This research showes that 55% of children who they have bruxism have got considerable teeth facet. Conclusion: Bruxism is the origin of various difficulties and problems of dental system such as teeth loosening, crack and fractures in teeth , periodontal pocket, TMD, facet, muscle pain and headache so that identification of bruxism prevalence, symptoms and related parameters are very important for example if initial nocturnal bruxism of a person is identified at early stage, destructive effects can be reduced by using methods like night guard.
