| dc.description.abstract | Odontogenic infections are one of common causes of dentists visit. There is also high rate of odontogenic infections in patients visiting tertiary hospitals. Odontogenic infections present with different space involvement. In this study, we aim to evaluate gender and space involvement in odontogenic infections.one of the most important etiologic factorsare uncontrolled metabolic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. Methods: In this descriptive-cross sectional study, 83 patients with odontogenic infections visiting maxillofacial surgery ward, Imam Reza educational medical center in 2012 were evaluated. By reviewing patientsE medical records, demographic findings including age and gender and involved spaces were recorded. Results: Diabetes mellitus 38% , Hypothyroidism 23%, Hypertention15%, Seizure 8%, Mascular dystrophy 8%, Parkinson 8%. Conclusion: A higher prevalence rate of odontogenic infections has been reported in patients with systemic diseases such as diabetes mellitus. as a result dentists should pay attention to thorough clinical examinations in relation to blood glucose level in patients with diabetes mellitus, who have odontogenic infection. on the other hand, patients should receive instructions to observe oral hygiene to prevent odontogenic infections. | |
