Surface smoothness of glass inomers during finishing and polishing is needed to decrease plaque accumulation and its surface roughness is required in some restorative approaches. Therefor, it is critical to have a method for surface roughness assessment in clinical conditions. The aim of this study was to evaluate laser fluorescence efficacy for surface roughness measurement. Methods and materials: After preparing 80 glass-inomer samples in prefabricated moldes, the samples were divided into four groups randomly. Different polishing approaches (diamond bur, coarse disc, coarse and medium disk, coarse, medium and fine disk) were employed in these gropus. Then, the surface roughness of samples was measured using profilometry (gold standard) and diagnodent laser fluorescent in combination with methylene blue staining and statistically analyzed. The P<0.05 was considered significant in this study. Results: Profilometric values indicated a significant difference in sample surface roughness among experimental groups (P<0.05). The highest surface roughness was shown at diamond bur samples and the lowest was obtained for fine disks. Diagnodent laser values were also significantly difference in experimental groups with the same surface roughness order (P<0.05). Profilometric and diagnodent values had significant correlation in each sample group (P<0.05). Conclusions: Using Diagnodent laser after methylene blue staining is a valid method for surface roughness assessment of dental materials which can easily used clinically. Diamond bur preparation revealed the highest surface roughness and the fine disks the lowest.
