Saliva plays a critical role in homeostasis of oral cavity, since creates the balance in oral cavity ecosystem. Respecting very important roles and various functions of saliva in oral cavity, this study aimed to compare the salivary pH, one of the important parameters of this fluid, in type II diabetics and healthy individuals in referees to oral medicine department of Tabriz dental school. Materials and methods: In this study 48 individuals with type II diabetics as a case group and 48 healthy individuals as a control group were selected from referees to oral medicine department of Tabriz dental school in last 6 months of 1390. After explanation of study aims to individuals and signing informed consent by them, 1 ml of saliva was taken by a sampler and sent to laboratory in a closed container. Metrohm pH meter was utilized for salivary pH measurement. Student t-test was used in order to determine the significancy of difference in pH between diabetics and healthy individuals. P<0.05 was considered significant in this study. Findings: The mean of pH in diabet patients and healthy individuals were 6.96 0.71 and 7.53 0.58, respectively. Student t-test revealed that the difference between salivary pH between diabetics and healthy individuals was significant (P<0.001). Analysis of exact Fischer exam indicated that the difference between male to female ratio was not significant between diabetics and healthy individuals (P>0.05). Student t-test showed that the difference in age mean between two groups was not significant (P=0.114). Respecting Pearsons correlation, there was not any association between blood glucose and HbA1c with salivary pH (P>0.05). Conclusions: Based on the findings of this study, the salivary pH level in diabetic patients was lower than healthy individuals.
