dc.description.abstractFollowing the change in the level of blood cortisol, the hormone levels in the saliva and salivary cortisol changes the identifier of the cortisol serum free cortisol is biologically active. Levels of the stress hormone cortisol is increased in certain diseases. Biological and psychological factors in patients with TMD susceptible to stress and lower cortisol very effective. In this study, salivary cortisol levels in patients with temporomandibular syndrome disorders (TMD) and healthy controls were studied. Materials and Methods: This study observed a case - control disorders in two groups of patients with temporomandibular syndrome were referred to the Department of Surgery, School of Dentistry, Tabriz University, was conducted. Results: In the mean salivary cortisol level was normal 8.89ng/ml while that in patients with TMD, mean salivary cortisol was about 29ng/ml. Conclusions: Increased cortisol can increase the risk of a TMD.
